20260312 Did "Hudson and Rex" reference a fraud that brought down a financial system?

Thursday, 12 March, 2026 - 03:03

The TV series "Hudson and Rex" is Canadian series based on the concept in an Austrian-Italian coproduction called Kommissar Rex, which incidentally, is well worth a watch. The point is that those behind the series have a history of looking for influences, as do so many.

In series 8, episode 8, there is one aspect that resonates with a crime that fascinated the financial world but which has since received little attention. And yet, one of the most important aspects of that crime pops up with in the series with some fascinating common features.

20260228 Computer programming needs a punk rock moment

Saturday, 28 February, 2026 - 11:58

Wank: to pleasure oneself

Wanker: a person who wanks

Computer programmer: a person who wanks in public.

Ergo: computer programmers are wankers.

20260211 Crashing out of my lane

Wednesday, 11 February, 2026 - 07:34

I first started work in a solicitor's office when I was 15. That was in 1974.

20260104 The media: information pool or slop bucket?

Sunday, 4 January, 2026 - 00:36
Good Media should create participants not spectators.

If the internet is full of slop, newspapers, be they in print or online, should be the antidote, says Saurabh Malik in this post . Mr Malik is the Deputy Legal Editor at The Tribune.

As a publisher, I don't disagree. Well, not entirely.

20251222 Broken Justice - joining the dots to show how you are at risk even when you have done nothing wrong

Monday, 22 December, 2025 - 10:57

Two crypto entrepreneurs have pleaded guilty and been sentenced to five years' in jail for conduct that is not a crime. How can this happen?

broken justice - countermoneylaundering.com

Imagine that you are sleeping at home at 5 am when there are flashing lights and a bull horn outside your house causing maximum attention from your neighbours.  Dozens of federal agents and local police have arrived at the door, mob handed, and take you, your family, your computers and records away. Why? Because they can. And the nightmare is just beginning. Justice is not just broken, it's shattered.

Below is the full script, warts and all, of my lecture to students at a university in Malaysia today.

20251207 Before you serve a tech salesman coffee, or let him buy you lunch, there are things you should find out.

Sunday, 7 December, 2025 - 08:58

I see far too many posts and media reports about companies that are proud that they have adopted tech that's not out of nappies and has had a gestation period of weeks, not months or even years.

"But hey," they say, "last month the vendor announced another multi-million stage of fund raising so they must be doing something right."

20251201 McLaren, Qatar and Risk Assessment

Monday, 1 December, 2025 - 08:07
No Conspiracy and not even a cock-up: not all mistakes are wrong when they are made and not all risk assessments are flawed - the unexpected happens.

20251119 The intelligent, educated idiot and the inadvertent con trick.

Tuesday, 18 November, 2025 - 03:33

I met a young (compared to me) man. He is intelligent, educated and an idiot.

He encourages people to "invest" in bitcoin. He holds seminars. People pay to hear him speak about bitcoin.

And he speaks very well. He speaks very convincingly and he speaks with both passion and sincerity.

He speaks with integrity and believes everything he says.

And he's wrong but he's too blinded by BlingCoin to understand why.

You can talk to me about it but i'm not coming to your seminar, I said. So he talked to me.

20251123 That was good, oh, no, it wasn't.

Thursday, 13 November, 2025 - 13:51

There's much talk about how important data is but yesterday at the Las Vegas Grand Prix we saw what happens when the data is incomplete and people look at their computers instead of at what's happening in front of their eyes.
